DevOps impact on ICT recruitment
DevOps and the Influence on IT Recruitment and Selection The introduction of DevOps has not completely turned the IT recruiter’s field of work upside down, but it has certainly affected how sourcing issues are approached. Integrating development and operations requires a specific mindset and skill set of employees. In this blog, I briefly outline what DevOps means and the impact it has on recruitment and selection within IT.
DevOps: An Integrated Process from Development to Operations DevOps is a contraction of Development (Dev) and Operations (Ops). The concept assumes a seamless integration between the development of software and systems and the operational running and management of those solutions. Traditionally, there was a clear division between these two areas, both in terms of people and methods and tools. DevOps aims to eliminate this separation by creating a single integrated approach.
DevOps as a Logical Sequel to Agile Agile development has already brought about a shift in how software is developed by breaking away from the traditional waterfall methodology. Whereas waterfall methodology assumes sequential steps such as specifications, design, development and testing, Agile introduces a short-cycle and iterative process. In Agile, multidisciplinary teams work in short sprints on specific parts of functionality, which can be delivered and put into production after each sprint. The Transition from Agile to DevOps Although Agile has reduced frictions in the development and testing process, there often remains a separation between the development phase and the management phase. After the sprints, the functionality is still passed to a management organization that is used to working with releases and version control.
DevOps aims to make this transition seamless by extending automation processes into the management phase. This means eliminating the frictions between development and operations management, which has significant implications for the knowledge, mindset and tooling required within an organization. The Impact on ICT Recruitment and Selection The transition to DevOps requires a different approach to recruitment and selection. Here are some important aspects:
1. Multidisciplinary Skills: Employees must have a broad set of skills that include both development and operations management. This means that administrators must have knowledge of development and testers must also know how to manage code.
2. DevOps Mindset: DevOps requires a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Employees must be willing to leave their comfort zone and look beyond the boundaries of their traditional role. This requires a mindset focused on teamwork, flexibility and an openness to change.
3. Knowledge of Tools: Familiarity with specific DevOps tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, and Ansible is crucial. These tools support the automation and integration that are central to a DevOps environment.
4. Continuous Learning: The rapid evolution of technologies means DevOps professionals must constantly learn. Recruiters should look for candidates who have a proven ability to adapt quickly to new tools and methodologies.
Conclusion DevOps has certainly influenced, though not completely overturned, recruitment within ICT. Recruiters must now look for candidates with multidisciplinary skills, a DevOps mindset and knowledge of specific tools. The integration of development and operations requires a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement, which means that the ideal DevOps candidate is not only technically proficient, but also has a flexible and inquisitive attitude. DevOps is more than a methodology; it is a fundamental change in how we think about software development and operations management, and this should be reflected in the approach to recruitment and selection.
